The Beauty Of Celtic Tattoos

Some of the most common types of tattoos today are the Celtic tattoos, with designs obtained from the symbols used by an old European culture. The Celtic people once covered much of Europe and had a unique language, religion, and culture. The symbols that Celtic people used in many of their designs have been incorporated into the popular Celtic tattoos of today.

The Celtic people originally worshiped a host of gods and goddesses, but as they became increasingly exposed to Christianity, many of their shapes and symbols became decidedly more Christian in appearance. Many of the designs used by the Celtic people included such elements such as crosses and stars or were adapted to appear more Christian to avoid conflict. These elements remain in traditional Celtic designs and tattoos.

In the beginning, Celtic tattoos were used by Celtic warriors as a sort of permanent war paint. Designed to identify each other and instill fear in the enemy, these warriors often fought their battles bare-chested so that their tattoos were visible to all. In those days, tattoos were a sign of toughness and fearlessness in the face of danger.

There are many different types of Celtic designs that can be incorporated into a Celtic tattoo. Many of the tattoo designs that individuals display are custom designs, incorporating several different aspects of Celtic art. Many professional tattoo artists will be able to combine different Celtic designs into a customized tattoo that the person can be proud of.

Some of the most recognizable features of a Celtic tattoo are the “knots” that are used to create the designs. These knots resemble interwoven vines or ropes and are often arranged to form a particular shape within the tattoo. The shapes formed by the knots can be almost any shape that the person desires, from basic shapes like circles and crosses to more complex shapes like a star.

Some of the Celtic tattoo designs contain images of animals that were important to the Celtic people. Animals such as geese, dogs, and butterflies were frequently incorporated into the Celtic designs because they were held in such high esteem and were such beautiful creatures. In some cases the animal is the focus of the tattoo, but in others, the animal is only part of the background design.

The number three also figures heavily in many Celtic designs. The number three is typically displayed somewhere in the design, whether as the tail of a fish, incorporated into the knots design, or hidden deep within the design. The shape of the number three is generally a rounded, circular shape and the size could be small or large.

The typical Celtic designs are lovely when incorporated into a tattoo and there are tattoo designs available for both males and females. Most tattoo design studios will have a wide variety of Celtic tattoo designs available and, if more selection is needed, additional images can be found on the internet. Many individuals choose to obtain custom designed Celtic tattoos, but these can be expensive depending on the artist and the size of the tattoo.
